As a technology employee and/or entrepreneur, what is your greatest asset?
The answer is easy. Your greatest asset is right in front of you.
It's YOU.
You are your greatest asset.
Why do I say that?
You are your greatest asset because you have the ability to trade your time and talent for equity in tech companies. This is a tremendous value because with no traditional capital (dollars) you can invest your time and talent to be part-owners of some of the most highly prized companies around. Over time you can take that equity and convert it into passive income producing assets!
Think of it this way: Your Time + Your Talent = Equity
The talent portion of the equation is something I like to call Career Capital.
Career Capital is what you provide to get the ownership shares in the company. It’s comprised of the three key things below:
📌Your Education
📌Your Experience
📌Your Results
EDUCATION -The education piece is comprised of exactly what you think it is—your formal education, post-graduate training, and even certifications you've received from course completions.
But it's also important to think of your education in terms of HARD SKILLS and SOFT SKILLS, too.
Which hard skills are the most important for you to develop to advance your career and to create more opportunities for yourself? (Watch the video for my TOP THREE recommendations!)
And, which soft skills should you develop to truly be an asset to your company? For example, especially in the tech industry, being able to break down and communicate complex ideas into easy-to-understand concepts is a highly sought-after skill!
EXPERIENCE- An important question to ask your self right now is: Even if you've experienced a layoff recently or a reduction in work, can you participate in a project to gain some new experience that will add value to your next position?
RESULTS - Can you translate the success and results you've created into a story that makes sense from a business perspective?
If you take the time to develop your career capital, you'll be making a huge investment in your greatest asset—YOU! And, that's the most important component to growing your career and building wealth.
